Borl Castle, set on a high limestone rock just above the confluence of the Drava River and the Bela Stream, has reigned here for centuries. First founded in the 12th century, possibly even earlier, it has always played an essential role due to its strategic location along the Hungarian-Croatian border with the former Austrian Empire. It originally served primarily as a Hungarian border outpost but later became the center of a lordship that passed through different owners over the centuries.

But it’s not just about the castle – the surrounding area is perfect for walks (and cycling). There are forest paths, narrow asphalt roads leading to vineyard cottages and hamlets, around small hills from whose peaks are fairytale views in all directions. To the northwest is Pohorje, and beyond it in the distance, the snow-covered peaks of the Slovenian Alps. To the south, you can see the Zagorje mountains, Ivanjčica, Ravna Gora, and to the east, Grebengrad, Ham, Čevo, and even Kalnik.
Our walk lasted 3 hours and 30 minutes and covered a little over 15 km. The GPX track can be downloaded on Strava: https://www.strava.com/activities/13208134676

This hiking/walking trip was an end-of-year gathering for members of the End7ess SoulSport club on Strava. There were eleven of us, and the weather was cold but sunny. The atmosphere was great. We finished the walk and had a get-together lunch in Ptuj. All in all, it was a well-spent day!
