Thinking about how to actively spend this Sunday, our thoughts went to Kalnik, an unusual hill situated at the borderline between Zagorje, Prigorje, and Podravina, some 80 km from Zagreb, Croatia.

Its highest peak, Vranilac, is only 643 meters high, but don’t underestimate it. Only skillful climbers can master it using the hardest trail. The rest of the hikers (it is a very popular destination) can use much lighter trails around, well-marked and accessible.

From the peak to the northeast, there are rocky “teeth”, popularly called “the seven teeth”. We were there many times, but now we were in the mood for an easy walking path, so we went for a circular go-around path, planning to avoid the hardest parts.

Well, we didn’t get what we wanted! The circular trail we choose is not the prettiest and certainly not the easiest one. Partially, our trail follows the marked paths, but also crisscrosses them, leading to some places obviously rarely visited. Starting from a Mountain Lodge (well, it is more like a restaurant and picnic area) at 470 m elevation, we gather some more 630 m in ascend and equally so in descent.

The last part of our trail led us through the west reef and right onto the teeth! All in all, 3 hours of quite a demanding trail. If you want to repeat that adventure, you can download the GPX file HERE.

Enjoy!
